Toujours Tingo, a book by Adam Jacot de Boinod, lists weird words and bizarre phrases from around the world. The "tingo" of its title is an Easter Island word, meaning to borrow objects from a friend's house one by one until there are none left.
My favorite? Les avoir a zero: French for "to have one's testicles down to zero", or be frightened.
"You can slide down my hunchback using your tongue as a brake".
Wow. And here I thought I was mean.
Great list!
I have a crush on a Parisian word "griffe"; a personal map in your brain and in you mind of the routes you use on a regular basis; from house o commute to cafe to office to work site to lunch, back to the office or work site to country road, take me home...
That is a great book.
...Country Roads, to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mama, take me home, country ....
(Sorry). Got carried away.
I love it that you have a crush on a word.
Isn't Ma Griffe a famous perfume?
The name of the author's book is "Toujours Tingo." It is the sequel to his first book, "The Meaning of Tingo." Both are meant to be lighthearted books, examining language from many countries to explain actions, meanings that might not come close to an English definition. The act of singing at the same time that you are crying can now be captured in one word: Chantepleurer, or a person's fear of walking into an old house in the middle of the night can be summed up in Japanese by writing or saying hira hira.
I posted it to "Better Write Now" because of the various phrases that writers may be interested in, to express themselves. But I will completely understand if you delete because Better Write Now is a place for fellow Newsviners to have their works critiqued and improved upon. I certainly did not seed this to upset anybody. If you delete, based upon your group's objective, I would understand. If you wish, Renderedtruth, I will do so voluntarily. It is your group, and I respect your absolute right to maintain the group's integrity. Plus, I want to benefit from being involved in that group and taking advantage of the writers who have joined.
# 5 - VMS - You are doing fine here! GG
#5.2 - renderedtruth - VMS will be an asset to your group. I appologize for sniping, I shouldn't have done that. It goes against my religion, "Love thy neighbor". It's not always easy when there is disagreement about deep-seated beliefs. I realize I was off-target. What was I thinking? Friends, anyway? I'll work on my skills. Peace to all. GG
Chantepleurer: French for singing at the same time as crying.
I'm planning to do this tomorrow morning at our church's Messiah sing!
Really? I think you should write a story on that!
